Cevdet Erek
Sound artist and composer Cevdet Erek caught my eye whilst searching for sound artists. He makes epic rhythmic sound installations in open spaces. for instance in the first video link the viewer walks from a clothing department through into the exhibition space. I think this is such a cool idea using spaces like empty shops and opening them up to public art.
He is a Muslim artist who was part of the Turkish band called Nekropsi. A pretty experimental sounding band. He uses traditional instruments relating to his culture to make the sounds. His installations involve large spaces with intersecting sounds. So you are encouraged to walk around and hear the symphony of sounds weave in and out of each other. I like that people post these on youtube for others to experience. obviously not in the same way at all, but you can still take a journey through it.
I'm a sucker when it comes to basslines and drum beats so I think that is why I was attracted to his work. There is something meditative about it, maybe the repetition of a beat and sound. It works well in the spaces he works in as he is using the acoustics to his advantage. Making his work site specific.
I can see myself wanting to try out a bit of sound experimentation. I love the idea of repetition. And maybe using sounds recorded and overlapped like if I relate it to my own work the sounds of the wind on trees and the sound of feet walking along a woodland trail. just love the idea of making something that questions more than one sense. I love installations which have sound playing alongside it, it makes you think a little deeper and I kind of zone out. It immerses you.
I love this installation. The person taking the video moves around the space and experiences the different sounds going on. It's very calming and there is something about the space and his sounds that go so well together.
