Holy Island Digital Editing from 30th December

To show any editing I did to my images prior to choosing my final pieces I thought I should write up a post with comparison images. Since I worked mainly in analog I want to show the work behind my digital imagery.
I use a Nikon D3200 DSLR. I'm no expert at using the settings but I know some basics and I try and adapt to the light and change lens' when needed.

(f/5.6, ISO-100, Exposure 1/125)
The difference looks subtle between these two but I decided to make it a Black and White image as there was no colour in the scene and the sky and sea started to merge.
Once removing colour I reduced the exposure and straightened it out. I didn't crop this image as the line leading up the centre of the image leads nicely to the boat .

I think the outcome is effective. The Black and White gives it depth and allows the focus to stay with the leading line. This image was the starting point for my decision to use Holy Island as my subject.

For my final image of this photo I decided to make it more interesting and make it into a kind of mirrored image. I didn't flip the image just rotated it round and I think it works better because the swirling line continues to flow down the piece. I wanted to take a risk and make something I haven't tried before.

(f/5.6, ISO-400, Exposure 1/40)
In this piece I did a lot more work! Usually I frame my images quite well whilst taking them but I think for this image I had taken what I would say was a snap, not a composed photograph.
I straightened this image up first to see if I could get a good composition. I think the castle and the boat kind of stand tall side by side.
I again decided this image would look best in Black and White as the colours were quite muted and the sky was overexposing. I reduced exposure which brought out detail and brought out the boathut which in reality is a dark black. The only cropping occurred when I rotated the image to straighten it out and it sat nicely in the frame.

Within my final piece I added his mirrored image as a chance to add interest to an ordinary photo and the lines in the boat hut take you perfectly down the image.
