David hockney style Photography collage

I was challenged to take photos in a collage style like David Hockneys Joiners (Which I mentioned in a previous blog post here). I can't even explain how much I enjoyed this process, I have always wanted to try this out. I knew exactly where I wanted to do it as I had been before and It's such a pleasing building to look at. It's Bernat Klein's old studio which was designed by Peter Womersley, and has been sat empty for far too long. I think work has started but It never seems to go anywhere. We'll see.

I stood infront of the area I wanted to photography and without moving my feet i rotated my camera from left to right in a snake pattern. So starting from the bottom left corner and going up then down again etc. I tried to move my camera carefully each time, but essentially I quickly snapped so I didn't overthink each photo.

I tried the tradional method of joining first, photos below, where I printed out about 30 photos onto plain paper in a bank card size and I joined them back together. It's harder than it may look. Not every piece I used coz other photos already joined up the part of the scene. I also found it hard to glue down as I found I wanted to go back under particular photos. It was trial and error basically.

I really like the last one I did, pictured above, probably because by that time I kind of knew what I was doing. And I like the fragmented effect I managed to get out of it. I also tried it on a computer, picture below, to see how different It would look and I found it really weird. I didn't look at my original piece at all while doing it and it looks very different. A lot narrower and a lot neater I think.

I much prefer the tradional method for this technique, I love things that I can build with my own hands or get a feel for physically instead of flat on a screen. I will be trying this out with my instax polaroid style camera too. It's definitely a technique that requires patience, but you can be much looser than you think while taking each photo.
